Last October 19, 2013, the members of the White Coats on Every Kid worked on the 2nd activity at Brent International School Baguio. On the week before the day, we had a meeting on what our next activity would be. Only few of us attended the meeting and so, only few suggestions were raised on what activity would be good to be executed. We had agreed on doing an egg drop experiment to raise awareness for the children about the packaging of different goods and for them to build something on their own to know more about it.
Like the previous activity, we have started the day with an ice breaker. It was for them to untangle us which we have made through our arms. I believe that all of us really enjoyed it. They were able to discuss among themselves on how to untangle us and it was also fun for us to guide them.
After the ice breaker, we were divided into groups once again. I was with my other schoolmates - Jay Heo, Kirk Mariano and Helen Tae. We were grouped with 3 lower school girls. We started by introducing ourselves and the activity. At first, we had a hard time because they seemed to be shy and it was hard to communicate with them. However, we were able to start with the activity. We have prepared different work sheets and materials for them to build a protection for egg from not breaking when dropped from a height. They started to build things with socks, rice, newspapers, balloons, straws, tape and other materials that could be found easily in our surroundings. They were given 2 trials to experiment on it. On the first trial, they seemed quite not interested because they did not want to work on it actively. As a result, the egg broke when it was dropped. However, this changed on the 2nd trial. They really exerted much effort in improving what they have done wrong in the first. Because of that effort, our group was able to protect the 2nd egg from breaking.
I would really have to admit that this activity was quite hard to teach and assist. I thought that this activity would be fun at first, but it was really hard to get their attention. Despite that, the activity ended with happiness because of the fact that the children were able to perform the activity successfully. I really found it very exciting to see their happy faces after making it into a success. There are a lot of things that I have learned from it. Although there may be some language hindrances between us, we still have ways to communicate with them. Also, it was really worth of watching them trying to lead something into success. I felt happy to help and assist them so that they would learn a lesson, not only about science but also about not giving up. I also learned from them that it is not good to give up. They failed at first but they learned from it. I also think that it gave me a lesson to never stop trying. Overall, the activity made me and the children to learn a lesson and act on it.
