HAIS MUN 2014

Last July 20, 2014, I attended an MUN Conference at Seoul National University GECE. This conference was a one-day activity where I was assigned to represent Brazil in the Disarmament and Security Council (DISEC). This committee was assigned with a topic to discuss about the aftermath of the crisis in Syria. I decided to join this conference to know more about the issues around the world and to practice what I have learned in the MUN club at school.

During the first part of the conference, I really felt awkward because I knew no one in our committee. This is why I felt more nervous to give my opening speech in front of them. However, I took the courage to speak up clearly so that I would be able to overcome my fear of speaking in front of people. As the conference went on, I felt that I was getting more confident about what I am supposed to discuss with others. I actively participated in the debate process to defend the country. I think I did this even more because I did not want to regret like the last MUNA conference where I was not able to speak up.

When the debate was going on, I realized so many things about what was going around in our community. It was a great opportunity to pay attention to the current events which can impact our safety. Since I do not know much about the disarmament and security aspects of the world, it was really lucky for me to be there to get myself more knowledgeable. It was really somewhat hard to defend a stance which is different from my personal view but I really tried my best to put myself in the position to be realistic about our society.

Although I was really tired at the end of the conference because it lasted until 9pm, I did not regret anything from the conference. I was not only happy because I actively participated in the activity but also because I made so many friends from this conference. My friends in the DISEC committee were really nice and friendly that until now, we still contact each other for current events and for friendship. I believe that this was another activity that made my vacation fulfilling and fruitful. I expect that I would be able to participate this well again in the succeeding MUN conferences. I think this made me get more interested about issues around our world and join in resolving these issues. Even as a student, I believe that there are still a lot to contribute and that is what I plan to do as I explore more!
